Contemporary Seascapes reflecting an inner landscape
I have painted the sea for as long as I can remember. Having grown up in Cornwall, the waves and rugged coastline got under my skin. A sense of awe and inspiration from the coast has never left me and continues to inspire my practice today. The sea has this ability to take me beyond myself - to look up and to imagine a new world or as I like to say to ‘Remember The Future.’ This is a pathway to try and capture an inner world or the ‘sea within’ each one of us. My work therefore becomes as much a reflection of an inner landscape as it is the outer world.
There is a slow process and rhythmic way I approach my work in order to get to that place of raw emotion. This process eventually leads me to quick & intuitive bursts that bring paintings into there fullness. These ‘burst's’ require a boldness and a leaning into the intuitive over the rational.
Between 2014 & 2016 I trained as a studio apprentice to world renown artist Makoto Fujimura in both his New York & Los Angeles studios. This was a profoundly shaping experience for my thinking and practice and continues to be so.
My hope is that my work provokes a sense of beauty, wonder and mystery to the viewer. An invitation to step into a quieter and in some ways a more contemplative way of seeing art.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss the possibility of a commission, a Kintsugi workshop or a speaking engagement.
